The story begins with the Patel family and, specifically, Piscine Patel, or "Pi" for short. What follows for the Patel family, however, is unexpected. Everything the Patel family owned was destroyed in a single devastating storm at sea. Pi is the last surviving Patel and is tasked with safeguarding a Bengal tiger (named Richard Parker), a hyena, a zebra, and an orangutan.
