The story starts by introducing the Patel family and, specifically, Piscine Patel, or "Pi" for short. What follows for the Patel family, however, is unexpected. Everything the Patel family owned was wiped out in a single devastating storm at sea. Pi is the last surviving Patel and is charged with protecting a Bengal tiger (named Richard Parker), a hyena, a zebra, and an orangutan.
