The story begins with the Patel family and, specifically, Piscine Patel, or "Pi" for short. What follows for the Patel family, however, is unforeseeable. Everything the Patel family owned was decimated in a single destructive storm at sea. Pi is the last surviving Patel and is responsible for safeguarding a Bengal tiger (named Richard Parker), a hyena, a zebra, and an orangutan.
